Posted by Blog Lady Dee as Content is Queen
The last Content is Queen post on comments struck a chord. Today, I offer another discussion on comments that still has me scratching my head in bewilderment.
Based on a thread from one of our social communities. Okay, I admit, I stole the topic, but it is important enough to warrant addressing. What I have to assume was a newer blogger asked, “Do you reply to your comments?” Even after I picked my jaw up from the floor and thought about it, I still don’t understand why any blogger would ask this question.
The whole point to hosting a blog–whether you blog for the love it or aim to make money blogging–is the interaction. Yes, you can have a private blog and write for therapy. I’m not addressing that sort of blog here. If you have a public blog and have comments enabled, yet don’t reply to your comments, I think you are missing the whole point to having a blog.
Why would you work so hard to get traffic and readers, then ignore their comments? We talked about the blogger that toils away posting day after day…and gets no comments. They apparently would be delighted with even a *nice post*…or *interesting idea* type comment.
This is the same situation from the other side. Your readers leave comments that add to your content. They stimulate discussion in your blog. Why would you not do them the courtesy to reply?
If they took the time to comment, then believe me, one way or another– they will be checking back to look for your reply. What kind of message do you send if you do not reply to them? In my opinion, it’s a very quick way to kill off your blog… You’re shooting yourself in the foot.
Now, if you don’t want to reply to the *nice post* comments that seem to be spam or an obvious ploy for a backlink, you can chose not to publish them from the beginning. But, if you’ve waited for validation… wondering if your visitors are even reading your posts…and finally get a comment even a generic one, you should reply.
Part of the equation of writing a blog is devoting the time to post AND answer comments. If you aren’t willing to devote that time, there are two solutions. The first may sound a bit harsh…blogging might not be for you. If you don’t wish for interaction– a static website may be more your cup of tea. Otherwise, if time is your issue, then find a college student or friend who could use a bit of extra spending money and outsource your replies.

1Dee you have nailed a point that really gets under my skin.
Actually not responding to your comments is rude. If you don’t plan to respond you should have the comments turned off. In my humble opinion anyways.
When I go to a blog, take the time to read their post, like it enough to comment on it, and then get no response. Well it just plan bugs me.

2Hi James,
Obviously, I agree with you. I still can’t quite believe that a blogger would ignore the readers like this. I suspect, they haven’t thought this through to the inevitable result: alienating their readers.

3I have a hard time understanding the opposite reasoning as well. As a blogger I actually feel *bad* if I don’t respond right away - its like asking a question in front of an audience and not listening to the answer. Why would anyone NOT reply?
I default to this example all over the Blogosphere, but Leo at ZenHabits.net is a huge example of this. He posted the supreme example of this, here — it is a post entitled, “Ask Me Anything You Want - 100 Questions” http://zenhabits.net/2008/03/ask-me-anything-you-want-100-question-extravaganza/
Talk about an incredible way to build reader loyalty.

4Sorry - to clarify - Leo is a great example of the positive effect of answering comments - you could read my sentence there in a couple of different ways…. :)

5Hi Metroknow,
The two reasons that popped up in the thread over and over were–*I barely have time to post let alone answer every comment*…and some comments don’t *require* an answer.
Both just make me cringe. Ouch.

6I can see the point of responding to comments where it adds value for the readers. But I don’t see the value in page after page of:
Reader 1 - “you’re great!”,
Blogger - “Thank you!”,
Reader 2 “Great post”,
Blogger “I appreciate the positive feedback”,
etc.
Yes, we all want comments. But the comments I want are those that seek to deepen the content. Just my thoughts.

7Hi Baldeagle,
Of course, every blogger wants well thought out comments, that’s a given. I made the point that the blogger can control which comments he/she choses to publish. When we begin—we’re delighted to get any comment other than spam. To encourage quality comments, you can chose not to publish the generic ones. Your regular readers usually will give you better quality –so you won’t risk offending them.
And yes I realize, I will find a couple of comments to moderate that say *nice post* later today. LOL

8I must admit that baldeagle definitely has a point - and when I thought about it, I realized that I definitely don’t have hard and fast rules about it. For many of the “nice post” comments, I don’t think I generally reply (at least, that is my self-impression). Sometimes if I get several of them, I acknowledge them all in one single returned comment.
One thing I do however, even with the “nice post” comments, is reply in email (if it looks legit) to thank them for the visit. It takes effort and time, but I think I’m building a more loyal readership by adding that layer of personal touch.

9Hi Metroknow,
That’s an excellent point. By emailing them, you do continue to establish a relationship. So, you aren’t really ignoring the comments. That personal touch, though time consuming, adds to your reputation. I would also infer that your customer service would be very good.
