Hi Metroknow,

That's an excellent point. By emailing them, you do continue to establish a relationship. So, you aren't really ignoring the comments. That personal touch, though time consuming, adds to your reputation. I would also infer that your customer service would be very good.

I must admit that baldeagle definitely has a point - and when I thought about it, I realized that I definitely don't have hard and fast rules about it. For many of the "nice post" comments, I don't think I generally reply (at least, that is my self-impression). Sometimes if I get several of them, I acknowledge them all in one single returned comment.

One thing I do however, even with the "nice post" comments, is reply in email (if it looks legit) to thank them for the visit. It takes effort and time, but I think I'm building a more loyal readership by adding that layer of personal touch.

Hi Baldeagle,

Of course, every blogger wants well thought out comments, that's a given. I made the point that the blogger can control which comments he/she choses to publish. When we begin---we're delighted to get any comment other than spam. To encourage quality comments, you can chose not to publish the generic ones. Your regular readers usually will give you better quality --so you won't risk offending them.

And yes I realize, I will find a couple of comments to moderate that say *nice post* later today. LOL

I can see the point of responding to comments where it adds value for the readers. But I don't see the value in page after page of:
Reader 1 - "you're great!",
Blogger - "Thank you!",
Reader 2 "Great post",
Blogger "I appreciate the positive feedback",
etc.

Yes, we all want comments. But the comments I want are those that seek to deepen the content. Just my thoughts.

Hi Metroknow,

The two reasons that popped up in the thread over and over were--*I barely have time to post let alone answer every comment*...and some comments don't *require* an answer.
Both just make me cringe. Ouch.

Sorry - to clarify - Leo is a great example of the positive effect of answering comments - you could read my sentence there in a couple of different ways.... :)

I have a hard time understanding the opposite reasoning as well. As a blogger I actually feel *bad* if I don't respond right away - its like asking a question in front of an audience and not listening to the answer. Why would anyone NOT reply?

I default to this example all over the Blogosphere, but Leo at ZenHabits.net is a huge example of this. He posted the supreme example of this, here -- it is a post entitled, "Ask Me Anything You Want - 100 Questions" http://zenhabits.net/2008/03/ask-me-anything-you-want-100-question-extravaganza/

Talk about an incredible way to build reader loyalty.

Hi James,

Obviously, I agree with you. I still can't quite believe that a blogger would ignore the readers like this. I suspect, they haven't thought this through to the inevitable result: alienating their readers.

Dee you have nailed a point that really gets under my skin.

Actually not responding to your comments is rude. If you don't plan to respond you should have the comments turned off. In my humble opinion anyways.

When I go to a blog, take the time to read their post, like it enough to comment on it, and then get no response. Well it just plan bugs me.
