Free blogging platforms can be a very easy way to start blogging and for the most part, if you are looking for a way to keep in touch with friends, family, or just need an outlet- thats the way to go.

 BUT if you are looking to make money from a blog, then you need your own domain name.

Ther are several reasons for this. The first being that if you choose, say typepad.com and start blogging there- you own nothing! The domain name is theirs, traffic is theirs, and you really have no control.

Also, if you ever want to move platforms you risk losing a lot of the information AND massive amount of traffic as you can’t re-direct your blog to a new site.

For Search Engine purposes as well, it is MUCH more difficult to make your site search engine friendly and bring in the traffic you need to make money from a hosted blog.

So, all I can here is that it is very important to start out blogging the easy way and get your own domain name.
