Sending Your Readers Outside, Good or Bad?

The other day I wrote a post about adding an RSS feed to your blog. It wasn’t a super long post and it linked to information that was dead on when it came to actually implementing the plugin I recommended.

Could I have re-stated what that information was in my own words… sure.. but why? The article is clearly written, with details and pictures, and I feel is much better than I could have done.

Does it hurt to send readers to another person’s site? I say no way. Everyone on the net is searching for information.. sometimes it’s there and sometimes it is not. If it is there, and the information is dead on then why not link to it, especially if it is not your personal specialty. Your readers will appreciate this and know that no matter what, you will present quality.

What are your thoughts?

It took me quite a while to get my head around to sending people away from my site. I guess I expected to lose that reader for ever.

Eventually I realized that by sending readers away from my site I was still giving them what they want and for that reason they do remember me in a positive way.

I am still struggling with whether I should be sending out of my site through a new window so that my window is still there. I am starting to lean toward having the link open in the same window.

Hi James!

Yes.. I do think it is not the easiest decision and I am sure you would find many people disagree with me on this one. I guess my thoughts are the same there, in the sense that I want people to think positively about what I can present to them. I don’t always have the best answer… but I CAN find it! :)

Most times I do try to send them through a new window so ours stays open and hopefully they will come back, but I can understanding not wanting to have your reader not be frustrated with the multitude of windows they have open which may perhaps cause additional confusion.

Thanks for response.. always love to hear what other people think and do there as well!

Hi Mike,

Give us a bit…it’s not finished. We aren’t staying with this one either. Our old one didn’t like the Wordpress upgrade, nor would it let us add our logo. About the time you get used to it– it it will probably change again :)
